After School ProgramThis program addresses the severe academic deficiencies that currently exist within a larger population of the area youth. Local college students assist with one-on-one tutoring and small group mentoring for those children that need extra help with homework completion. The goals for this program include improving education levels and computer knowledge to reduce risk factors associated with poor academic performance, while increasing the protective factors associated with a positive attitude towards all levels of academics and the provision of an appropriate environment for learning. The program is open to any child in the area and serves children from grade school through the college prep years. The Northeast Ministry is an approved provider of afterschool education by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. |
Summer ProgramsFor seven weeks, weekdays during school’s summer vacation, this program provides youth a safe and structured environment for educational activities and life skills training, blended with recreational events that make learning fun. Guest lecturers such as Community Police Officers teach anti-drug and anti-violence sessions. Positive role models and tutors help the students with reading, writing, math, and computers. The children are exposed to culturally enriching activities such as art classes, field trips to museums, sports camps, and swimming. Both breakfast and lunch are provided. Ballet ProgramThe Afterschool Ballet Class at Marvine Elementary School has been a very successful program. Along with a sound ballet technique, the children are also learning the discipline expected in a ballet class, respect for their fellow dancers, and a love of dance. This program instills in the boy and girl students responsibility and creativity while enriching their cultural experiences. Ballet gives the students a chance to express themselves through movement, which can help them grow as individuals and as a group. |
Family LiteracyFamily Literacy serves disadvantaged families with children ages birth through 8 years old who have a literacy need. The Family Literacy program helps parents provide for their children’s education while improving their own skills in English and GED preparation. Family Literacy also provides job readiness training and parenting education. This program increases the protective factors of the family unit by allowing parents to develop necessary skills and training while simultaneously providing their children the building blocks of education. Early Childhood EducationA goal of Family Literacy is to help parents provide for their children’s education. As part of this program, on-site childcare with early childhood education is provided for pre-school children while their parents attend on-site adult classes. |
