Winning a drawing contest

Hi!  My name is Xavier Harper, and I'm 13 years old.  Back in April, I was asked to enter a drawing contest sponsored by HUD (Housing, Urban and Development).  Since I like to draw this make me very excited, because I would like to be an artist.  The theme was " What does home mean to me".  So I went to work on the project.  I was lucky to have the help of my art teacher Angie Sndyer, she teaches art classes at Northeast ministry, where I go after school and during the summer.  I drew a house with lots of windows and rooms.  I picked a speical room that was mine and wrote what that room meant to me.  I gave the project in on June 25.  Yetsreday when I came to the after school program, Steve told me that I won the state part of the contest and now my project is on to the national level.  I'm very proud of myself

My Tutoring Experience at Northeast Ministry

caitlyn with jamine

I have been working at the Northeast ministry for the past year as a tutor, and the experience has been amazing.  Working with the kids has been so much fun that it doesn't seem like work most of the time.  It's really great to know that I am helping these kids to do better with their schoolwork and giving them a greater opportunity to succeed.  Throughout the year I have had a chance to get to know the kids and have found that they are all incredibly intelligent and have a great deal of potential, only needing someone to push them to suceed.

My experience at Northeast Ministry has given me insight not only into how these students learn, but also how to help them learn more effectively and help them with their everyday problems.  My time here has been wonderful and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Maria Lopez's Success Story

Maria with Executive Director Steve Godbolt at graduationThe Northeast Ministry is a perfect get away place.  My parents took advantage of their programs for children in the Marvine-Pembroke area

At the age of six, I began my adventure at the Ministry in the summer program.  As I grew older and continued in the summer program but also joined the after school.  I had an excellent staff helping me reach some of the goals that I set for myself.

Growing up in the projects is not an easy thing.  I watched my two brothers and sister drop out of high school. At times I felt discouraged and wanted to drop out myself, but the staff was behind me all the way.  They believed and encouraged me to be the first in my family to graduate high school but also attend college.

With their support and faith in me, I graduated high school and enrolled at Kutztown Universtity.  The Ministry  awarded me  the Sally Young Memorial Scholarship.  The award helped me with books and tution.

On December 19, 2009, I graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in sociology.  Currently I'm employed with  the Salisbury Behavioral Health.

I would like to thank everyone at the Northeast Ministry that helped me obtain my dreams!!!!!!
